Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Refractometer -T10007 A-
Inspecting antifreeze protection of the coolant
  WARNING
t  Coolant additives are toxic!
t  Do not inhale coolant vapours, do not swallow coolant, avoid contact with skin and eyes; hazardous if consumed!
t  Observe the disposal instructions for the drained coolant.
  Note
t  When inspecting the antifreeze, read off the exact value on the light/dark boundary shown on the corresponding scale of the refractometer.
t  Before starting the test, let a drop of water drip onto the measuring glass using a pipette for improved visibility of the light/dark boundary. Now the light/dark limit is clearly visible at the „WATERLINE“.
–  Clean the measuring glass of the refractometer before inspecting the antifreeze, so that the test result will not be incorrect.
–  Let a drop of coolant drip onto the measuring glass → Operating instructions of refractometer.
–  Hold refractometer against a light source and read off the temperature down to which antifreeze protection exists on the scale for ethylene glycol:
  Caution
Vehicles produced up to MY 02 are filled with coolant additive G12 - which has a lilac colour and conforms with the standard TL VW 774 D.
Vehicles produced as of MY 03 up to MY 07 are filled with coolant additive G12 + - which has a lilac colour and conforms with the standard TL VW 774 F.
Vehicles produced as of MY 08 are filled with coolant additive G12++ - which has a lilac colour and conforms with the standard TL VW 774 G.
Use the scale of the refractometer -1- for coolant additives G11, G12; G12+ and G12++ when measuring the antifreeze.

The scale -1- of the refractometer -T10007 A- is valid for the coolant additives G11, G12; G12+ and G12++.
  WARNING
It is also possible that a specific vehicle was filled with the coolant additive G13 - which has a lilac colour and conforms with the standard TL VW 774 J → Electronic catalogue of original parts.
  DANGER!
In case of doubt or uncertainty:
t  whether the cooling system of the vehicle has already been topped up or filled with the coolant additive G13 - which has a lilac colour
t  which coolant additive was filled in the vehicle
use the scale of the refractometer -2- for coolant additive G13 when checking the antifreeze.

The scale -2- of the refractometer -T10007 A- is valid for the coolant additives G13.
–  Clean the measuring glass of the refractometer after inspecting the antifreeze.
Antifreeze protection of the coolant
  WARNING
Antifreeze protection of the coolant must be ensured down to about -25°C.
In countries with an arctic climate, the antifreeze protection of the coolant must be guaranteed to approx. -35°C.
If a greater antifreeze concentration is required for climatic reasons, the concentration may be increased up to 60% (i.e. antifreeze protection down to approx -40°C). Any further increase in concentration increase would reduce the antifreeze protection and impair cooling efficiency.

Replenishing coolant additive
  Caution
Vehicles produced up to MY 02 are filled with coolant additive G12 - which has a lilac colour and conforms with the standard TL VW 774 D.

  Note
t  The cooling system is filled all year round with a mixture of drinking water and coolant additive with anti-corrosion agent. Coolant additives prevent damage from frost and corrosion and the accumulation of lime scale while also raising the boiling point of the coolant. For these reasons the cooling system must always be filled all year round with coolant additive and anti-corrosion agent offering these properties.
t  All coolant additives, approved by ŠKODA AUTO a.s., prevent frost and corrosion damage as well as the formation of scale and also increase the boiling point.
t  For these reasons you must use coolant additives 12 months a year.
t  The higher boiling temperature of the coolant contributes to the engine's reliability when the engine is stressed, especially in countries with a tropical climate.
t  Other coolant additives may specifically impair the provided corrosion protection.
t  The resulting corrosion damage may lead to a loss of coolant and subsequently cause major engine damage.
  DANGER!
Do not use coolant additives that have not been recommended by ŠKODA AUTO a.s.

–  When topping up, use coolant additive for all vehicles depending on the current offer → Electronic catalogue of original parts.
  WARNING
When topping up with coolant additive, pay attention to the miscibility of the products → Anchor.
If the vehicle is filled with the recommended coolant but the antifreeze protection is not adequate, drain part of the coolant.
  Note
t  Collect drained coolant for proper disposal.
t  Observe the disposal instructions for the drained coolant.
  WARNING
The cooling system must be bled with the actuator diagnosis (coolant shut-off valve of heating system -N279- on vehicles with auxiliary heating and with coolant shut-off valve of heating system -N279-) → Vehicle diagnostic tester.
–  Perform a test drive and again check the coolant antifreeze protection → Anchor.
