Drain off or suction off engine oil; replace the oil filter and top up with engine oil
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Old oil collecting and suction equipment e.g. -V.A.G 1782-
  Note
t  The engine oil should always be changed, if possible, when the engine is at normal operating temperature.
t  It is absolutely necessary to observe the oil disposal instructions!
t  It is not permitted to clean and re-use the oil filter!
–  Take off cap.
–  Suction off engine oil with old oil collecting and suction equipment
or
–  Remove the noise insulation.
–  Screw out the oil drain plug and collect the oil in a suitable vessel.
  Note
The gasket ring on the oil drain plug or the oil drain plug (with integrated gasket ring) must always be replaced depending on the version of the oil drain plug → Electronic Catalogue of Original Parts.
–  Clean oil drain plug, mount new gasket ring
or:
–  Screw in new oil drain plug with integrated gasket ring
–  and tighten to 30°Nm.
–  Replace engine oil filter → Chapter.
–  Pour in oil as stated in the specifications → Anchor.
Engine oil capacities:
t  with oil filter change approx.:
3.5 ltr. (1.8 ltr./110 kW, 2.0 ltr./85 kW Engine)
3.6 ltr. (1.9 ltr./74 kW, 1.9 ltr./96 kW Engine)
3.8 ltr. (2.0 ltr./103 kW)
4.3 ltr. (1.9 ltr./77; 1.9 ltr./85 kW Engine)
5.4 ltr. (2.5 ltr./114 kW, 2.5 ltr./120 kW Engine)
5.7 ltr. (2.8 ltr./140 kW, 2.8 ltr./142 kW Engine)
The engine is factory-filled with quality multigrade oil, which can also be used as an all-season oil, except in extremely cold climatic zones.
   
VW-engine oil standards:
Engine fitted Variable service intervals (QG1) Fixed service intervals (QG2)
Fuel engines:  
All fuel engines: VW 504 00 or VW 503 00 VW 501 01, VW 502 00 or VW 504 00
Diesel engines:  
Diesel engines TDI without PD: VW 507 00 or VW 506 01 VW 505 00, VW 505 01 or VW 507 00
Diesel engines TDI PD: VW 507 00 or VW 506 01 VW 505 01 or VW 507 00
Diesel engines TDI PD with DPF: VW 507 00 or VW 506 01 VW 506 01 or VW 507 00

–  Close the oil filler opening again.
–  Start engine and check for leaks.
–  Check the engine oil level again and top up with oil if necessary.
–  Wait at least 3 minutes after topping up the oil again before inspecting the oil level again → Chapter.
–  Install the noise insulation.
  Note
The oil level must not be above the range -max- to avoid damage to the catalytic converter. See Inspecting engine oil level → Chapter.
